Presents Stormwater Management in Sustainable Urban Design
On November 3, 2009, the Environmental Water Resources Institute of the Pittsburgh Section of the ASCE hosted an event on Stormwater Management in Sustainable Urban Design.

Janet Attarian, AIA, LEED AP, Project Director for the City of Chicago DOT Streetscape and Sustainable Design Program presented a review of the projects and activities undertaken by the City of Chicago with the goal of creating a green infrastructure for the 21st century. Ms. Attarian showed examples of recent sustainable infrastructure projects in the City of Chicago, such as the award-winning Green Alley Program, the Sustainable Design of Maxwell Street Market Plaza, the Cermak/Blue Island Sustainable Streetscape, and others. For each of these she explained their design, construction and real life operation and maintenance phases. Ms. Attarian’s exciting presentation provided a unique insight to all aspects of urban design and the benefits of such an approach.

The second presenter, Nancy Shultz, P.E., D.Wre. an engineer with CH2MHill, reflected on the development of urban stormwater management throughout history including the evolution of sewer and stormwater management design criteria. She provided intriguing examples of the selection of the criteria based on “risk to values”, such as design storms for Greater Cincinnati.
The event drew over 40 water resource professionals, who engaged in interesting Q/A session following the speakers’ presentation.
