SEI Call for Presentations (16 Oct 2026)

SEI Pittsburgh Members,

We are putting out a call for speakers for our 2026-2027 quarterly lunch meetings. These meetings will provide opportunities to our members to learn and network with each other, more details on the meetings themselves will be coming out in the future. We are looking for half hour presentations. Topics can range from published research to interesting projects to other topics that would be good to share with the local structural engineering community. This could also be a great opportunity for younger professionals to gain presentation experience & feedback in a low key, safe environment.

If you are interested, please register your presentation idea here, using the registration form.

To be considered for the inaugural meeting, the deadline for presentation ideas is Friday 8/21/26! But we will be accepting topics to be considered for the remainder of the 2026/2027 meetings through Friday 10/16/26.

Presenters would need to be available to present their topic in person around lunchtime at the locations selected in the Pittsburgh metro area & on the dates selected (around 1st Wednesday of the selected months).

Fernow Experimental Forest Tour (17 Oct 2026)

Come join EWRI Pittsburgh on October 17th to learn about one of the earliest environmental science research sites east of the Mississippi that contributed to the basis of our day to day environmental science and water quality today - The Fernow Experimental Forest! PDH credits will be awarded for this event.

Fernow was founded in 1934 and is run by the USDA Forest Service. This tract of ecological highland was allocated for the purpose of laboratory environmental studies due to its species diversity and historically was one of the earliest programs of its kind, with respect to water quality and forest health. The program's uniquely long stream chemistry data history along with the program's expansions over the years has contributed to the foundations of modern environmental engineering - some of which encompasses the basis of what we call stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) used today. Those developments occurred alongside management actions for mixed oak forests monitoring, and contributions to endangered species management.

Our host, Benjamin Rau has decades of ecological experience in the watershed program with the Forest Service, and has both a PhD and a Masters in Hydrology. He has worked to develop and improve the experimental watersheds of various national forests across the country.

Fernow is located in central West Virginia, right outside of the city of Parsons. Being that we're an organization in Pittsburgh, we will be arranging carpooling for this trip upon request. For those in the Pittsburgh area, we recommend departing at 8 in the morning to arrive on site when the tour begins. The tour is anticipated to be at least 3 hours long, plus lunch. Parking is available at the Forest Service building at 459 Nursery Bottom Road.

Pizza will be ordered on-site and is included in the attendance fee! If you have any allergies or other dietary restrictions, please email Jon Wall at jon@shadysidepa.com and we'll be sure to accommodate! ASCE EWRI Pittsburgh typically hosts at least two touring events each year, and we're also always open to having new volunteers.

Come and join the YMF for an afternoon of Arsenal Cider, apple picking, and shopping around the Farmer's Market! We will meet at 11:00 AM at Arsenal Ciderhouse in the main farm area for a glass of cider before we set out to pick apples and walk through the pumpkin patch.

All are welcome to attend, no registration necessary. We welcome all members, old and new, to come and have some fall-fun with us!
