One of the many new methods of ground improvement that have recently entered the market place is the use of closed-cell expanded polystyrene (geofoam) as soil replacement. Geofoams have been used in numerous geotechnical and transportation engineering applications including: a light weight replacement for soft or unsuitable materials, lightweight fill behind retaining walls to reduce lateral loads, lightweight fill for voids, control of settlement, light weight fill for garage decks, bridge abutments, and other structural elements.
Mr. Nico Sutmoller is a geofoam applications specialist with Insulfoam, LLC. Mr. Sutmoller has used geofoam products in geotechnical, transportation, and architectural engineering applications, including projects at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Alexandria, Virginia. Mr. Sutmoller has also recently worked with numerous state highway departments to develop specification guidelines for the use of geofoams in their states.
