ASCE GeoInstitute Pittsburgh Chapter Presents
Design-Build Support of Excavation for City Creek Center, Salt Lake City, Utah
Rick Deschamps, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE
Thursday, December 15, 2011
Attendance at this technical presentation qualifies participants for 1.0 PDH.
The City Creek Center – Block 76 Project included the demolition and redevelopment of an entire city block for mixed use retail, office, and residential properties directly adjacent to Historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Adjacent property included four existing buildings between 9 and 23 stories that remained at the corners of the project, and a light rail system that ran along one side of said buildings. Excavation was carried out 65 feet below street grade, and by as much as 50 feet directly below adjacent buildings, which were supported by shallow foundations. The project was let design-build with multiple geotechnical construction techniques employed to reduce cost, including the following: diaphragm walls, soil nail walls, jet grout
walls, micropile underpinning, and auger cast piles. The presentation will cover design, construction, and key lessons learned.
Rick Deschamps is Vice President of Engineering at Nicholson Construction Company. He completed his graduate work in geotechnical engineering at Purdue University. His civil engineering experience has spanned consulting, academics, and construction. Rick has broad
geotechnical experience in areas including soil behavior, soil-structure interaction, and ground improvement. He currently leads Nicholson's engineering group with emphasis in development of competitive design-build systems and value engineering alternatives for geo-construction projects throughout the U.S.A.
