SR3077 A25 – Beaver Grade Road Emergency Landslide Repair
by Brian F. Heinzl, PE
In early January 2024 Beaver Grade Road, an important state route located in Moon Township, Allegheny County, was subjected to a significant hillside movement. Within the few days, the failing slope progressed to render the roadway completely impassible and closed to traffic. Adjacent residents grew increasingly concerned that their homes were in jeopardy of being swallowed up by the expanding landslide. Several media outlets provided continuing coverage of the rapid slide progression and shared the voiced concerns with the public. Through the quick action of a team lead by the Owner: PennDOT District 11; the Engineer: GFT, Inc., and the Contractor: Allison Park Contractors, the road and hillside supporting the adjacent community was able to be stabilized applying a combination of shallow and deep foundation techniques, and the roadway reopened to traffic within a few short months.
