EMERGENCY INSPECTION & PIER REHABILITATION OF I-579

In the Spring and Summer of 2025, did you wonder why there were lane closures on I-579? It was because on February 28, 2025, PennDOT District 11 officials discovered significant substructure deterioration at a pier on the north approach of the Veterans Bridge in Pittsburgh, PA prompting an emergency response. District officials reached out to HDR Engineering, Inc. to assemble a team to inspect, analyze and provide repair details on an accelerated schedule for this pier and to evaluate the condition of 34 additional piers on the north shore approaches. This presentation will go over the inspection of the piers, the findings and the emergency repairs and how all of these worked in concert at an accelerated pace to minimize bridge and lane closure times for this primary artery in Pittsburgh.
