  • Summer gas-tax holiday plan still alive:
Despite the hard work of ASCE Key Contacts that blocked Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain's proposal to impose a summer gas-tax holiday last week, the issue continues to garner support from policymakers. Echoing the plans set forward last week by McCain, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., this week indicated that she would also consider a gas-tax holiday this summer. Read This Week in Washington to learn more about this issue and ASCE's public policy activity.

  • Water deal favored despite concerns for future needs
Although a $180 million plan to transport reclaimed water from Florida's Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa is expected to gain final approval, some question whether proponents of the deal are overlooking long-term ramifications. The water, most of which currently ends up in Tampa Bay, would be sold to Tampa Electric Co.'s Polk Power Station and surrounding Polk County, but critics say the water may some day be needed to meet growing demand in Tampa and Hillsborough.
